What you will notice

What you get out of it

This is what changes in your day to day when you give your body well-guided hours without food.

Fewer breakouts

Many people notice fewer new pimples and less redness over the weeks.

Why:Smaller insulin spikes dial down signals that drive skin oil.

Less oily, less shiny skin

You get to the afternoon without that familiar shine on your forehead.

Why:High insulin and IGF-1 both influence how much sebum you make.

Less redness and inflammation

Your face looks calmer and more even.

Why:Studies link fasting with lower markers of inflammation.

Find your own triggers

Connect your breakouts to what you ate, thanks to photo logging.

Why:Dairy and sugar hit some skin types harder than others.

More confidence, less makeup

You look in the mirror more at ease and reach for less concealer.

Why:Calmer skin usually means less to worry about day to day.

Rest that shows on your face

An earlier dinner improves your sleep, and your skin shows it.

Why:Your skin repairs itself mostly while you sleep.

What the science saysIntermittent Fasting for Skin and Acne

No trials show that intermittent fasting improves acne. The evidence is indirect: low-glycemic-load diets reduced lesions in small trials, and fasting has been linked with lower inflammatory markers. A 16:8 window may help if it cuts snacking and sugar, but it does not replace dermatological treatment.

  • In 43 young men with acne, 12 weeks on a low-glycemic-load diet cut lesions more than the control diet (−23.5 vs −12.0). [1]
  • In 32 patients, 10 weeks on a low-glycemic-load diet reduced inflammatory lesions and the size of sebaceous glands. [2]
  • In 50 healthy adults, the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α dropped during Ramadan fasting. [3]
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Does intermittent fasting clear up acne?
It isn't an acne treatment, but it may help. Studies link insulin spikes and certain foods with more breakouts. Eating fewer times a day, without sweet snacking, helps many people get to calmer skin.
Should I talk to my dermatologist or doctor?
Yes, especially if your acne is moderate or severe, leaves marks, or if you take isotretinoin, antibiotics or birth control. Fasting can sit alongside your treatment, but never replace it. Your dermatologist will tell you how to combine them.
How long until I see it in my skin?
Skin renews in cycles of about 4-6 weeks, so changes are usually worth judging after 6-8 weeks of consistency. Before that, you may notice less shine.
Does fasting reduce inflammation?
Studies link intermittent fasting with lower markers of inflammation in the blood. In the skin, that may show up as less redness, though everyone responds differently.
Which foods can make acne worse?
For some people, sugar, refined flour and dairy, especially skim milk. Log your meals with photos and track your breakouts to find your own triggers.
