Does coffee break your fast? The straight answer
Black coffee: does not break your fast. With milk, sugar or bulletproof: it depends. Here is what you can add without wrecking your fast.
Part of the complete guide What breaks a fast (and what doesn't)
What the science saysDoes coffee break a fast? Black, with milk or sweetener
Black coffee does not break your fast: it has almost no calories, and no trials show it cancels out the effects of fasting. Coffee with milk or sugar does break it, because it adds calories and stimulates insulin. Caffeine slightly raises energy expenditure and fat oxidation, and can reduce appetite short term. Direct evidence on coffee and fasting is scarce.
- 100 mg of caffeine raised resting metabolism 3-4%; repeated doses over 12 h raised daily expenditure by 150 kcal in lean people (Dulloo 1989). [1]
- Caffeine (8 mg/kg) raised free fatty acids from 432 to 848 µEq/l and fat oxidation, with no change in glucose or insulin (Acheson 1980). [2]
- In mice, both caffeinated and decaf coffee increased autophagic flux in liver, muscle and heart 1-4 h after intake (Pietrocola 2014). [3]
The short answer
Black coffee does not break your fast. A cup of black coffee has under 5 kcal and does not trigger a meaningful insulin response. Drink it without worry during your fasting window.
The problem is never the coffee: it is what you put in it.
What you can add to coffee without breaking your fast
- Nothing (black coffee or americano): ✅ perfect.
- Cinnamon or a pinch of pure cocoa: ✅ essentially zero calories.
- A tiny splash of milk: ⚠️ technically it adds calories; in very small amounts the impact is minimal, but if you are after strict autophagy, skip it.
- Zero-calorie sweeteners (stevia, erythritol): ⚠️ no calories, but in some people the sweet taste triggers an insulin response. Use them sparingly.
What DOES break your fast
- Sugar, honey, syrup.
- Milk or plant milk in any real amount (more than a splash).
- Bulletproof coffee (with butter and MCT oil): it breaks a food fast, period. It keeps you in ketosis, but it is NOT a full fast and it does not give you autophagy.
- Any store-bought flavored coffee loaded with syrups.
Does coffee help you lose weight while fasting?
Caffeine mildly stimulates the nervous system and can suppress appetite and bump fat oxidation a little. It is not magic: your weight comes down to total calorie balance. But as a tool to get through your fasting window without cravings, black coffee is a great ally.
How much coffee is too much
2–4 cups a day is a safe range for most people. On an empty stomach, too much caffeine can cause heartburn, jitters or a racing heart. Listen to your body, and do not use coffee to mask real hunger all day long.
How Ayúname helps
Ayúname shows you which phase you are in and when your window opens, so you know whether that latte lands in fasting time or already in eating time. The phase timer tells you if you are still in autophagy or better off going black.
