What the science saysGentle Postpartum Intermittent Fasting

There are no trials on intermittent fasting postpartum, and breastfeeding raises your energy and fluid needs. Studies using a moderate calorie deficit suggest that losing around 1 lb (0.5 kg) a week does not affect a baby's growth or, in the short term, milk production. A gentle 12-hour schedule with nutritious meals, after your doctor's go-ahead, is more sensible than long fasts.

  • In 40 overweight breastfeeding mothers, losing ~0.5 kg/week between weeks 4 and 14 postpartum did not affect their babies' growth. [1]
  • In 67 exclusively breastfeeding mothers, 11 days of calorie deficit did not change the volume or composition of their milk. [2]
  • A lifestyle intervention cut retained weight at 6 months postpartum by 3.6 kg compared with standard care. [3]
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

When can I start fasting after giving birth?
Once your doctor or midwife gives you the go-ahead at your postpartum checkup, and only if you're not breastfeeding. Every recovery is different. Always start with 12:12.
Should I talk to my doctor or midwife first?
Yes. Check in before you start, especially if you had a C-section, gestational diabetes, anemia, high blood pressure during pregnancy, or if you take medication. Also if you're feeling very tired or low: your health comes first.
Can I fast while breastfeeding?
We don't recommend it. While you're breastfeeding, your energy and fluid needs go up. Ayúname is designed for after breastfeeding. If you want to organize your meals before then, talk to your midwife.
What kind of fasting suits postpartum?
Gentle protocols: 12:12 and, if it feels good, 14:10. Avoid long fasts, OMAD, or combining fasting with very low-calorie diets.
How do I get my belly back without dieting?
Set regular mealtimes, lead with protein and vegetables, walk daily and, when you're cleared to, work on your pelvic floor and core with a professional. No rush: your body took nine months to change.
